Circe | Book Review

I’ve tried my best to not include any spoilers even unintentionally. If you haven’t read the book, feel safe to read the review 🙂 I’ve also tried to keep it short (under 500 words) so that your attention span doesn’t get in the way IF you have a problem with that like I do.

My journey into Greek mythology started with the Percy Jackson series. I loved everything about it. I learned so much from it and I hoped other writers would write about other mythologies in the same way because it’s such a fun way of learning about them. I was so in love with the Greek Gods. They seemed really nice and kind. Not all of them, but I didn’t have anything against most of them and then I read Circe.

Let me tell you, more than the book, I loved how Madeline Miller wrote the story. It was SO MUCH FUN to read it and almost every line could be used as a quote. I got stuck to the book. I don’t read fast because I spend a lot of time living like the protagonist and then get lost in my own thoughts sometimes, and I love doing that. Here though, I did imagine myself living as Circe in her evil world but at the same time, I found myself flipping through pages very fast. I usually only read at night but I found myself reading even in the day time, I would be excited for it to be night again so that I could continue my adventure.

Circe is a character who, I think, everyone will be able to relate to in a lot of ways. Unlike what I had imagined immortals to be, she’s not perfect, her life is not perfect. She isn’t surrounded by people who like her either. She’s lived a life of loneliness and sadness but that helped her find herself. I found her to be very motivational.

If you are someone who is trying to find yourself, and someone who doesn’t much enjoy spending time by yourself, you should read this book because it will teach you how necessary it is to learn to be happy in your own company. It teaches you to enjoy the littlest things even when everything feels like hell.

On the other hand, if you are someone who likes to be alone, more often than not, you should read this book because it shows you how you should value whatever time you have around loved ones.

If you’ve read a lot of Greek Mythologies but only parts of it and don’t seem to be able to connect the dots, THIS BOOK WILL HELP! I didn’t know this and when I read the book, I felt like I had read this somewhere before and then it would suddenly connect. Also, you might find yourself Googling a lot of things to know the standalone stories.

Also, have you ever wanted to be immortal? Please do tell me if you feel the same way after reading the book because it changed my opinion. It actually changed my opinion of a lot of things.

Overall, I think, no matter who you are and how much you know about Greek Mythology, you’re going to love this book. There are no prerequisites to reading the book but it’ll definitely be fun if you have, in the past, read some stories of Achilles, Daedalus, Icarus … and others (Basically if any of these names even ring a bell, you’re in for a ride)

You can probably tell by now that I loved the book, only I know how I contained my excitement while writing this and I hope you enjoy the book as much as me, if not more!
