What a life – Part 4

The next morning, Alana was excited to go to college again. Today, she would talk to Bret again. Maybe, things would be like before again. She couldn’t do anything about the way she felt about him but she knew that would get sorted out all by itself if she gave it time.

When she reached college, she saw Aliya and her new friend holding hands and walking in front of her. Blood rushed to her head. She was angry. How could she do this to Bret? “How hurt would Bret be if he would’ve seen this?!”. Without thinking she went ahead and pushed Aliya angrily. Aliya tripped over her own leg and fell, then turned around, annoyed, to see who pushed her.

“Why would you do that?”, Aliya snapped

“What the hell do you think you’re doing!? You do know you’re going out with Bret, don’t you”, her anger increased with every word.

“What do you mean ‘what do you think’? I’m going to the class with a friend. Why is that bothering you so much”, Aliya said getting up and dusting off the dirt from herself.

Alana mind went blank. She realized two seconds later that there was a huge crowd around her and Aliya. Aliya had her hand on her cheek and was in tears. She looked angry.

“HOW DARE YOU?!”, Aliya screamed, almost crying. Her new friend had his arms wrapped around her but he didn’t say anything or even make eye contact with Alana. “He is MY boyfriend. I can do what I want. Stop interfering and get the hell out of my life!”

What had she done? Did she just slap Aliya? When did this even happen? Alana was confused and shocked but a part of her was very proud of what she had done. “He’s your boyfriend and you better treat him right. If you don’t, this was only the trailer of what will happen to you”, she said with all the confidence she could collect and she walked off. She heard some people cheering for her behind her and then she heard Aliya scream something but didn’t pay attention to it. She looked down at her hands. They were trembling. Her right hand, she now realized, was burning because of the hard slap she had just given. She had never hit someone in her entire life. A voice inside her was squealing. She smiled.

When she got to class, she saw April and Bret sitting on their bench. She went and sat next to April and whispered to her “I slapped Aliya for what she’s been doing to Bret”. April gasped.

“Wha… You slapped her? For real?”, April was very annoyed with how Aliya had been treating Bret. She kept telling Alana how someday she needed to knock some sense into her, “I’m so proud of you. Though, that was pretty harsh. She would be pretty mad at you right now, no?”

“She can go to hell. Someone who can treat Bret like that is no friend of mine”, she said. She felt a little bad at first but the thought of her losing the first friend she had had here made her feel terrible. “I am feeling pretty bad though”

“You shouldn’t. You’re right. No one can treat, Bret like that. She might have never been our friend, Alana. We liked her because of who we thought she was. Maybe she wasn’t that. Maybe this is who she is!”, April consoled her.

“I heard my name! Are you guys spreading some sort of a rumor about me?”, he said with his old smile on his, “I’m so used to being the topic of interest”

“Yuck. Who even talks about you”, April said to him and the three of them laughed. Things were getting back to normal as Alana had wished. She almost cried because of how much she had missed this.

Aliya came to class an hour late. She walked past their bench and squinted at Alana. She went and sat next to Bret. There was a dark red print of Alana’s hand on her face. Bret asked her happened and tried to console her and she pushed his hands off.

During the break, Alana went and dropped April at the cafeteria and told her that she wanted to check on Bret. When she reached the class, Aliya barged out of the room and paid no attention to Alana’s presence. She entered the class to see what had happened. Bret sat on the bench. He looked sad. His face was red. He was looking at the floor. She sat next to him.

“Hey, what happened?”, she asked

“Uh..”, his voice was cracking. He cleared his throat and without looking at Alana, he said, “Aliya and I broke up. She dumped me. She said something about me not being a good enough boyfriend because I didn’t support her emotionally when she most needed me and-”

“Bret, she’s a bitch and the last thing you should be doing is feeling bad for someone like her”, Bret looked up at her. He was confused. “She dumped you because she found some other guy and when she finds someone else, she’ll do that to him”

“But.. Why are you saying this? She’s your friend and I’m sure she’s not that kind of a person”

“That’s what I thought, too, but she isn’t a friend. Not anymore”

Then he looked at her. His eyes had tears in them. “What’s wrong with me, Alana? How do I always manage to mess up”, he said in a very sad voice. He was on the verge of crying. She felt her heart become ten times heavier.

“Why would you think something is wrong with you, Bret? Nothing’s wrong with you”, she was also cracking up now. She could understand what he was going through. She could feel the pain. She moved closer to him. She hugged him and rubbed his back. “It was the wrong person, Bret”

“No, Alana. I always end up hurting people I care about. First you then Aliya. I just.. I don’t understand anymore. I feel like such a failure”

“What do you mean first me? You’ve never hurt me. Don’t you dare call yourself a failure-“, and Bret interrupted. He sounded so annoyed.

“Alana. That’s your problem. You just see the best in people. I know I hurt you. I know I did something that made you cry the other day and you know what? I could see that but I chose to ignore it. That’s the kind of person I am and you want to know more? I’ve been in love with you since the time we’ve met. I was in love with you even when Aliya and I were going out and I still love you”, Alana was still holding him but she’d stopped rubbing his back. Her mind raced. He heart beat really hard. It took her a minute to realize it wasn’t her ears that were betraying her. She pushed herself to face Bret again and looked at him. “Still think I’m the nice person? I ruined our friendship, Alana”

“Did you say you were in love with me?”, she asked just to make sure. Her voice was soft. She was almost whispering. Tears rolled down her face, “Bret! Tell me!”

“Yes. I’m sorry, Alana… I.. I’m sorry”, he looked away. Tears fell from his eyes too.

“I love you, too”, she said. Tears were streaming down her eyes now. Her heart was still beating really hard. Her stomach felt weird. Her mind whole body was in turmoil. Bret turned to face her as soon as he heard that. Shocked. The two of them looked at each other for a few seconds. In those few seconds, a thousand thoughts must have passed her mind.

“Say something, Bret. Don’t leave me hanging”, she tried to joke.

“You love me..?”, he asked again

“Yes, stupid, I’ve loved you since the first time we met too”, she said. She wiped her tears with her sleeves.

“Why..? What..? Why didn’t you tell me?”, he asked. He cheeks still covered with tears, She took her handkerchief out.

“You were the one who was going out with Aliya”, she chuckled.

Bret smiled. “I’m sorry, Alana. I really am. I wanted to-”

“Shh. It’s over now”, she placed her finger on his lips. “Everything is good”

Bret pushed her hand off. Pulled her and hugged her tightly. That took her by surprise. She wrapped her arms around him too. They stayed like that for a few moments. April stood by the door and watched them with a smile on her face. What happened around them didn’t matter. Nothing mattered. She had him.

Everything was good. Their story might not be a happily ever after one but it was everything was happy now and that’s all that mattered to her.

    1. You’re so nice :’) I hope so too!
April is a true friend and a really nice person so I’m pretty sure she’ll find someone awesome!
It’s weird how I’ve written the story but these characters seem like people who I just know. I don’t feel like I created them. It feels to me like I met them and spent some time with them and now they’re living their own lives.
Idk if that makes sense xD

      1. Hey, it’s totally relatable. Our characters are often modeled on some part of us, or of people we know and so of course when we write about them and give them a life of their own.. we sort of created them, they’re like our children, right!
